Are you the kind of mom you see on television? The mom-type you never wanted to become? Many new moms fail to realize that taking care of themselves makes them feel much better and supplies them with the energy they need to raise their families. It's easy to forget that it’s OK to be yourself. The truth: being yourself is liberating and allows you to raise your baby your way.
So which stereotypical mom did you become? And, don’t worry; we’ll help you become the mom you want to be. |
Mom types
Super Mom: The stereotypical super mom has a fulfilling career, spends time with her kids, maintains a perfectly clean home, and always manages to look stylish. Doesn’t that sound perfect?
SAHM: The stay-at-home-mom stereotype is often frumpy and has no interests outside of her kids. She’s the mom with drab hair, wearing sweats or high-waisted jeans and sneakers all the time. We all have a bit of this frumpy mom in us, but some women go beyond lounging in sweats at home and missing the occasional shower. If you now realize that the word comfortable (with no room for fun, sexy, or up-to-date) describes your wardrobe in its entirety, you might just be that SAHM mom.
Gossipy Mom: This mom will know everything about you in a few seconds and she’ll spread it around to the neighbors just as fast. If you find yourself badmouthing someone else's parenting skills to another mom on the schoolyard... well.. need we say more?
Gear Mom: Now this is the mom you need to have around. Her huge baby-bag is stuffed with extra baby gear for anyone who might need them. Bottles, wipes and complete outfits? She’ll have it all. No matter the event, she's prepared with a variety of baby gear at all times. Just check your bag to know if this is you.
Trendy Mom: When she’s near, the latest ‘baby’ gadgets are too. She has the newest digital monitors and a high-fashion baby bag. She's trying on baby sign language for size, employing Feng Shui in the nursery, and is studying attachment parenting books. We know it's easy to get caught up on the new-parent mayhem, remember that you don't need to be on top of every parenting philosophy or baby trend to be a good parent.
Tips and tricks to become the mom-to-be
Be impractical (once in a while): Moms appreciate comfortable shoes, but don’t be afraid to step into those sexy heels again. Daddy sure will appreciate it!
Walk tall: Be proud of who you are and don't be afraid to show your stuff. Throw your shoulders back, be yourself with pride and respect, chances are other people will take notice!
Refuse to gossip: It may be difficult at first if gossiping has become your primary means of communicating with others. Find other things to talk about, and if you must gossip a little, do so in a friendly way.
Get hairy: Being a mom does not mean you should schedule an appointment for one of those easy hairdos. Instead, keep your regular appointments for haircuts and color treatments. It’s the way you like it, right?
Put on some makeup: A bit of lip gloss, eyeliner, and foundation is enough to not look so mom-like. This is especially the case if you wore makeup before motherhood.
Carry the baby: You're probably carrying your child around all day. Don't let an overloaded bag put additional stress on your shoulders and back. Take what you need, don’t be afraid to forget something.
Easy on the gear: Having some babygadgets is fine, but leave some room and money for your own gear.
Be sexy: Motherhood is a life-changing experience, but that doesn't mean you can’t be sexy like you were! Reintroduce regular bras and lingerie into your wardrobe and make yourself wear no more than one piece of baggy clothing.
What it all comes down to is how you feel about yourself. If you are happy with how you look and the life that you live, that’s great! Don't change a thing. Just remember, you have the choice about what kind of life you live and what kind of mom you want to be.
